TCS 1

Welcome, fellow tortured composer! This week in the Tortured Composer Society there’s a few exciting things from the past and present that can help you become a better composer.

Video Inspiration: Beethoven's Bagatelles Decoded

A useful and engaging analysis of a Beethoven Bagatelle by Samuel Andreyev. A lot of inspiration for “piano textures” that can be taken from this video. I considered creating a similar piece by picking one theme, and then expanding on it with 4 different textures. Watch the video to see what I mean. It provides some awesome creative inspiration.

Book I’m enjoying - “Musical Composition” by Alan Belkin

Ever felt like music theory books leave you with more questions than answers? Alan Belkin's "Musical Composition" could be your solution. His book gives a lot of great answers to some composing concepts and provides a unique angle. Each chapter also offers some great exercises. This read will transform your understanding of music theory and enhance your composing toolkit. His Youtube channel also has some amazing analysis videos.

Great Post For Aspiring Game Composers

If you’ve ever thought about composing video games, this could be a great resource. It is a thorough introduction to the video game music industry. It also has a lot of great resources that you may want to reference in the future. I bookmarked this and will be coming back to it again and again.

Hope these resources can help you make better music and maybe feel a little less “tortured.” As always, if you have any ideas, feel free to hit “reply” and let me know.

The world waits for your music…
